Frequently asked questions

How much do tattoos hurt?

Tattoos can cause discomfort, but the pain varies greatly depending on the location of the tattoo and your personal pain tolerance. Areas with thinner skin or more nerve endings, like ribs or ankles, tend to be more painful. However, many people describe the pain as more of an uncomfortable sensation than unbearable. A good artist will work with you to ensure you’re comfortable, offering breaks if needed. It's part of the experience!

How much do tattoos cost?

The price of a tattoo depends on several factors, including the size, complexity, and placement of the design, as well as the experience level of the artist. My minimum fee is $120, while larger, more detailed pieces may cost hundreds or even thousands. We will always discuss pricing upfront to avoid surprises and ensure the quality of work justifies the cost.

Why are tattoos so expensive?

Tattoos are expensive for several reasons.

Running a clean, professional studio comes with operating costs like rent, utilities, health certifications, insurance, and sterilization equipment. A well-maintained and hygienic environment is critical in the tattoo industry, and these overhead costs are often factored into tattoo pricing. In order to keep a studio up and running, the artists must pay a fee for using the space and single use supplies. Artists will usually pay 40 to 60 percent of what they make to the shop.

Professional tattoo artists use high-quality inks, needles, machines, and sterilization tools, all of which can be costly. Cheaper materials can lead to bad results or infections, so quality supplies ensure the best possible outcome and safety for the client.

Creating a unique design from scratch takes time, creativity, and effort. Tattoo artists work closely with clients to perfect these designs before they even begin the tattooing process, and this adds to the cost. Your four hour tattoo session might have taken another 4 hours (or much more!) of unseen preparation and design time.

How long does it take to get a tattoo?

The duration of a tattoo session varies depending on the size and detail of the design. A small, simple tattoo can take as little as 30 minutes, while larger, intricate pieces may require multiple sessions over several hours. When booking, it's best to ask your artist for an estimate based on your specific design.

Can I get a tattoo while pregnant or breastfeeding?

I advise against getting tattooed while pregnant or breastfeeding. The primary concern is the risk of infection or reaction, which could affect both you and your baby. Additionally, the healing process may be more complicated during pregnancy. It’s best to wait until after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can you tattoo over scars?

Yes, tattoos can be placed over scars, but the result depends on the scar's texture, size, and age. Fresh scars need to heal completely before getting tattooed. Tattooing over a scar can help blend it into the skin, but keep in mind that the ink might not settle as uniformly as it would on unscarred skin, and it might require a touch up or two.

How should I care for a new tattoo?

Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure your tattoo heals well and maintains its vibrancy. Keep it clean, apply a small amount of unscented moisturizer if needed, and avoid picking at scabs. Also, steer clear of direct sunlight, saunas, hot tubs, and swimming of any kind for at least two weeks to prevent infection. I will provide detailed aftercare instructions during your appointment and in a follow-up email, so follow them closely to ensure the best results.

Can tattoos be removed?

Tattoos can be removed through laser treatment, with varying success. However, the process is often more expensive and time-consuming than getting the tattoo itself. Multiple sessions are usually required, and the success depends on the size, colors, and depth of the tattoo. Some colors, like green and blue, are more challenging to remove. While technology has improved, tattoo removal can still leave scars or faint remnants of the original design.

Can I bring my own design?

Absolutely, as long as it’s your own design or you have written consent from the original artist. If there’s a design you love but don’t have permission to use, we can use it as a reference to create something customized and personal for you, inspired by the original. I might suggest adjustments to make sure the design works well as a tattoo, especially in terms of size, placement, and longevity. Collaboration between the both of us ensures the best result.

How should I prepare for my tattoo appointment?

Before your appointment, make sure you’re well-hydrated, have eaten a meal, and are rested. Avoid alcohol or blood-thinning medications for at least 24 hours before your session, as they can increase bleeding and impact the healing process. It's also helpful to wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed. You’re welcome to bring snacks, headphones, a book, a (freshly washed) blanket, whatever you need to feel comfortable!

What’s the tattoo healing process like?

Tattoos typically take about 2-3 weeks to heal on the surface, but full healing can take up to two months. During the first few days, your tattoo will scab and peel, and during this time, it’s essential to avoid scratching or picking at the skin. Keep it moisturized and protected to ensure a smooth healing process.
